Hebraic Roots of Christianity
What do we mean by "Hebrew Roots". Of coarse most Christians realize that Jesus was a Jew. A statement was made to me that caused me to do some research on this whole Hebrew thought. I am a person that desires truth. And I like to think that I am open to "discussion" if it means learning new "Truth" about my faith. Now let me give you something to consider.
A lot of tension surfaces when we discuss the difference between Jews and Gentile Believers. But did you ever consider that that was not the way it was meant to be? One more question. Do you think it could be more of a "misunderstanding" between one or both parties (Jews and Gentiles). I guarantee you one thing. God did not send his Son to cause division. But as Paul said referring back what Moses said;
Deut 32:21 But I will provoke them to jealousy by those who are not a nation; I will move them to anger by a foolish nation. NKJV
He sent Him to bring salvation. First to the Jews, and THEN to the Gentiles (Romans 2:10). After all, Salvation IS from the Jews. (John 4:22)
Of coarse the biggest objection was about following the "Law" of Moses. First, to the Jew, the Torah (first 5 books of the old testament) is about walking a Holy walk to God. That is how God commanded them to walk. And Jesus reiterated that he did not come to abolish the Torah.
Matt 5:17-20
"Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.
18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means
pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these
commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and
teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say to you, that unless your
righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the
kingdom of heaven.
NKJV
Yes, the letter written by the Apostles released Gentile believers from the Yoke of the Law. But because at that time Jews and Gentiles worshiped together, there were some "minimal" rules that needed to be followed by the Gentile believers.
Acts 15:28-29
For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you
no greater burden than these necessary things: 29 that you abstain from things offered to idols, from
blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do
well.
NKJV
The biggest part of the crowd that Jesus was talking to was probably Jews.
The point is, if Jesus is telling them that if their RIGHTEOUSNESS is going to
surpass that of the Pharisees, they needed to walk the walk. What was the
"Walk"? Torah!
As for Gentiles, if you look at the New
Testament, or the "Renewed Covenant" as some understand it, much of what we see
is taken from the Old Testament. Love God, Love your neighbor, love your enemy.
Do not be sexually immoral, greedy, proud, boastful, .... the list goes on. Of
coarse the practice of sacrifice was permanently taken when Jesus died on the
cross, nailing all the things against us on the cross with him. The way I see
it, faith will get you in the door. But do you want to go deeper in a
relationship with the Almighty that will usher you further into the Sanctuary
than the outer courts. I know that I want to be called great and not the least
As for the
feast's of the Bible, what many people do not understand is that those feasts are
all prophetic shadows of the Messiah (Jesus). Passover is about the death of
Jesus. Feast of first fruits is about his resurrection. Though for Gentile
believers these may not be required feasts. But to experience them at least once might
give you more of an appreciation for how Jews Worship God.
I'm still
learning about Messianic Judaism. And there is so much to learn. I cannot even
begin to share some of the insight I have learned. But what I do know, is that
they Love the Lord their God. They Love Yeshua (Jesus) with all their heart.
They see scripture in a way that I wish all people did.
