Backsliding
John 11:9-10
Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble,
because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."
NKJV
Matt 18:6
"But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone
were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
NKJV
Matt 18:11-13
For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost. 12 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep,
and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying? 13 And
if he should find it, assuredly, I say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray.
NKJV
Heb 5:1-2
For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer
both gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is
also beset by weakness.
NKJV
1 Peter 2:25
For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
NKJV
2 Cor 11:3
But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from
the simplicity that is in Christ.
NKJV
1 John 3:7-9
Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.
8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that
He might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot
sin, because he has been born of God.
NKJV
John 11:9; skandalizo (skan-dal-id'-zo) ("scandalize"); to entrap, i.e. trip up (figuratively, stumble [transitively] or
entice to sin, apostasy or displeasure):
Mat 18:6;
proskomma (pros'-kom-mah); a stub, i.e. (figuratively) occasion of apostasy:
Mat 18:11;
planao (plan-ah'-o); to (properly, cause to) roam (from safety, truth, or virtue):
Backsliding can be looked at in several ways.
1. We do things in ignorance (lack of teaching) and so we sin. Maybe we saw something of the world
and we wandered from the truth to go after it. (It happens)
2. We do things even though we know they are wrong because of our sinful nature.
Whether sexual sin, anger issues, pride, selfishness. . . . we know these do not honor God,
but we have yet to work through these issues.
3. Someone causes us to sin. Satan wants to entice us and cause us to wander from the truth in hopes that
we do not return. And he uses people to do that.
One person will realize they did wrong and repent.
Another will justify his/her actions.
Hopefully we will all come to realize that sin needs to be avoided at all costs in our effort to honor God.
You don't always get all the information you need in church, so hopefully you
will get into Gods word, the Bible, and learn for your self.
Matt 5:29-30
If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part
of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw
it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
